Objective :To assess the effect of inhaled nitric oxide (NO) on cardiac pathological change and cardiac energy metabolism after smoke inhalation injury. Methods :21 dogs were divided randomly into three groups. In the normal group (n=4),animals without injury served as pathological controls. After smoke inhalation injury, the control group (n=8) was given oxygen (FiO2=045),the treatment group (n=9) was given oxygen (FiO2=045) mixed with 0004 5% NO.The myocardial histology was observed in various groups at the end of the experiment. Results :In control group,ATP content and energy changes (EC) were significantly lower than normal and treatment groups (all P<001),and the contents of ADP and AMP were also markedly lower than normal group (all P<001),but ADP was significantly higher than treatment gorup (P<005).Optical and electron microscopy showed that the myocardial pathological changes were milder in treatment group compared with control group. Conclusions :In the canine model of smoke inhalation injury, inhaled NO may improve cardiac energy metabolism and attenuate cardiac damage to certain extent.Inhalation of NO appears to be beneficial for the treatment of acute cardiac dysfunction following smoke inhalation injury.
