摘　　要：乔治·爱略特的小说创作充满了17、18世纪风俗画的现实主义风格。本文论述风俗画描绘技巧的视觉传统及其在爱略特作品中的运用,旨在说明其小说所描述的日常生活融合了荷兰风俗画和其他学派风格,含有历史宗教性,其叙述带有"问题画"的独特画风。在爱略特的笔下,可视与不可视是视觉艺术与文学所要阐释的两面现实,怡情与致用是小说功用,它始终贯穿于其小说创作实践中,爱略特的视觉经验在其笔下熠熠生辉。Genre painting in the 17th and 18th centuries pervades George Eliot＇s literary creation.This paper outlines the principal visual traditions informing her genre pictorialism and discusses her literary use of those traditions,including history and religion painting,narrative techniques and problem pictures,attempting to present Eliot＇s depictions of common life by distinguishing some of the different schools and sorts of genre painting which she imitated.In her vision,visual and literary art deals with two planes of reality：visible and invisible,which penetrates her literary practice.Visual experience is highlighted under her pen.
