摘　　要：《红字》作者纳撒尼尔.霍桑是19世纪后期美国浪漫主义文学的重要代表之一。《红字》作为其代表作一经问世便引起巨大轰动,时至今日仍是不朽的经典之作。作者娴熟的象征手法赋予了红色字母"A"丰富的内涵,使作品更具艺术影响力。本文浅析字母"A"在小说中的各种象征意义,以便使读者更好地理解《红字》这部经典著作。＂The Scarlet Letter＂ written by Nathaniel Hawthorne who is one of the most important representatives of the romantic literature in the United States in the late nineteenth century caused a tremendous sensation once it came out,so far it is still an immortal classic. The writer＇s skillful symbolism endows the red letter ＂A＂ rich in content,which makes the article more artistically influential. The work analyzes a variety of symbolic meanings of the letter ＂A＂ in order to make the readers understand ＂The Scarlet Letter＂ better.
