Objective To investigate the distribution characterization of smooth muscle bundle and alpha1 adrenoreceptor subtypes in different segments of human ureter. Methods Harvested the healthy ureteral segments including proximal/media/distal and ureterovesical segments from the surgical samples following operation. And measured the distribution of longitudinal and circular coursing muscle bundles of ureteral segments in hematoxylin and eosin staining and the alpha1 adrenoreceptor subtypes in different ureteral segments were examined by immunohistochemistry using α1 adrenoreceptor subtypes specific monoclonal antibodies. Results The microstructure of human ureter from proximal segment to ureterovesical segment showed the muscle bundles were so arranged that morphologically distinct longitudinal and circular layers cannot be clearly distinguished. Conclusion Our data suggests that the longitudinal smooth muscle bundles dominate in human ureter. The α1 adrenoreceptor subtypes α1A-AR,α1B-AR,α1D-AR mainly locate at the longitudinal muscle bundles of the ureter and the relative density of α1 adrenoreceptors are ureterovesical segmentdistal segmentmedia segmentproximal segment.
