Objective To elucidate the role of nitric oxide (NO) during the small intestinal migrating motor complex (MMC).Methods Rats were implanted with strain gauges in the duodenum and jejunum to recording the motor action of the small intestine in fasting and postprandial states after intravenous infusion of N G Nitro arginine methyl ester(L NAME), L arginine, D arginine, sodium nitroprusside(NaNP) and angiotensin Ⅰ,respectively. Results Intravenous infusion of L NAME, a NO synthase inhibitor, induced a MMC pattern of the fasting state of the rats. Infusion of NaNP, a NO donor, disrupted small intestinal MMC in fasting rats inducing a pattern of postprandial state. Both fasting and postprandial, infusion of L NAME shortened the duration of phase Ⅰand phase Ⅱ, but didn't change the duration, frequency, amplitude and speed of propagation of phase Ⅲ. L arginine, but not D arginine, infused together with L NAME prevented the effect of L NAME infusion. Infusion of L arginine, D arginine or angiotensin I alone didn't modify the small intestinal motor pattern. Conclusion An inhibition of NO synthesis may be involved in the initial MMC motor pattern during fasting, whereas an increase of NO output is related to the occurrence of the postprandial motor pattern.
