摘　　要：身为加尔文教派一员的霍桑深受基督教原罪思想的影响,并以祖先们对贵格会教徒的迫害为耻,这些经历通常使霍桑的作品中带有罪恶感的基调。《红字》作为霍桑的代表作就清晰的反映了他的这一思想。作者虽然认为人生而有罪,但并不相信罪恶的不可饶恕性。他鼓励人们通过善行来解除自己的罪恶。霍桑深信善举不仅能弥补罪恶,更能净化心灵,甚至可以是堕落的罪者转变为令人敬仰的凡间天使。《红字》女主人公海斯特正是这样形象的一个很好例证。霍桑通过对《红字》中主人公心理矛盾产生及化解的刻画和他们形象转变的描述,成功的完成了小说主题的深化和升华。Nathaniel Hawthorne,a leading American writer and a Calvinist,was shameful for his ancestors ＇ misdeeds and influenced greatly by the Christian view of ＂original sin＂. He believes that humankind was born sinful. This kind of his thought can be reflected clearly in his masterpiece The Scarlet Letter. He keeps a criticize eye on the adultery sin Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale committed,blames the cold revenge of Roger Chillingworth. But he does not consider that sin is not unforgivable. People can remedy their sin by goodness. God will also send angel to help people realize their sin and stops them from further sin,eg. Pearl. Hester were forgiven by God at the end of the novel. Hester even becomes a kind of compassionate maternal figure through her persisted helping to the poor and the needy. Thus,Hawthorne successfully portrays the heroine,with the theme of ＂original sin＂ of The Scarlet Letter.
