It is widely accepted that Object Files(OFs) are mid- level representations which mediate our conscious perception of persisting objects. However, Mitroff et al. (2005)have suggested the divergence between the conscious percepts of "which went where" in dynam- ic ambiguous displays and the analogous correspon- dence computed by the Object File system; though the movements of the objects were explicitly "streamed", the OFs manifested otherwise (i. e. "bounced"). The result challenged the OFs as mid- level representations in visual perception. However, their findings still remain questionable. To explore this issue, three experiments were conducted in the present study. It was revealed that ambiguous dis- plays and violation of solidity constraints which Mitroff et al. proposed were not proper explanations for the divergence (Exp. 1). Further investigation showed that Mitroff et al.' s results may be confounded by distance( Exp. 2 and Exp. 3) that the target stimulus was closer to ipsi-lateral previewed stimulus than to the eontra-lateral one, and orienta- tion( Exp. 1). Based on the findings of the present study, the author argued that OSPBs effect cannot be fully accounted for by the object representation continuity; rather it is vulnerable to the space-based selective attention. Thus, researchers need to be cautious while distinguishing "pure OSPBs" from "illu- sory OSPBs".
