High altitude cerebral edema (HACE) and high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) constitute two kinds of high altitude critical diseases, which form the greatest threat to human health in plateau environment, and they are also the main causes leading to death and inducing high altitude multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (HMODS). In the past, the final diagnosis rate of H-MOIDS was lower because the knowledge and information concerning H-MODS was limited. It is, therefore, extremely urgent to understand H-MODS well, so as to improve prevention and treatment, by investigating sensitive indexes for diagnosis, to establish scientific diagnostic scoring scale, and to look for effective clinical treatment, so as to realize early early diagnosis and early treatment. All these efforts would be important to improve prognosis of H-MODS. Diagnostic criteria and clinical first-aid measure for severe acute mountain sickness with H-MODS are highlighted in the present paper, hoping they will amuse adequate attention on improving prevention and treatment, raising the leval of first-aid and treatment strategy of H-MODS, and ensure the safety of immigrants to high altitude areas.
