摘　　要：福斯特是爱德华时代最重要的小说家之一。《霍华德庄园》通常被认为是他最成熟、最优秀的早期作品。小说中的中产阶级人物形象生动地展示了转型时期人们的精神状况、价值标准和伦理取向。通过对"英国状况"以及小说人物切身感受的困惑、焦虑以及种种思想危机的再现,福斯特对英国社会的现状做出了反思,对英国的未来表达了忧虑。Edward Morgan Foster is one of the most distinguished novelists in Edwardian period.Howards End has usually been considered as his maturest and most excellent novel in the early period.The middle class characters in the novel vividly demonstrate people’s mental condition,standard of value and ethical orientation in the period of social transformation.Through the representation of the ＂condition of England＂,together with the confusion,anxiety and the ideological crisis experienced by the characters,Forster conveys his introspection about the condition of England at that period of time,as well as expresses his worries over England’s future.
