摘　　要：杰瑞·沃德博士是美国迪拉德大学杰出教授、美国非裔文学研究领域的著名学者,也是研究创伤理论与理查德·赖特作品的专家,他与麦瑞马·格雷汉姆共同主编的《剑桥美国非裔文学史》是美国学界期盼的一部重要学术里程碑。这部文学史不再以审美价值作为评判美国经典非裔文学的唯一标准,而且进一步扩大了美国非裔文学的范畴。2009年12月19至20日,在武汉华中师范大学召开的美国非裔文学研讨会上,杰瑞·沃德教授就《剑桥美国非裔文学史》的编写与主要特点发表了主题演讲。在会议间隙,南京大学方红副教授采访了杰瑞·沃德教授,访谈围绕《剑桥美国非裔文学史》、《诺顿非裔文学选集》所确立的不同美国非裔文学传统与对美国非裔文学的不同界定之间的关系。在访谈中,沃德清楚地表明《剑桥美国非裔文学史》与《诺顿非裔文学选集》所确立的不同文学传统与其主编对美国非裔文学的不同界定与理解密切相关。不同于《诺顿非裔文学选集》的主编盖茨与麦克凯教授,沃德教授将美国非裔文学界定为美国非裔族群的文学,提出美国非裔文学传统既起源于黑人的口头文学、民间音乐与教会传统,也就应该包括反映美国黑人通俗文化的文学作品,美国非裔创作的散文、言情小说、市井小说都应纳入美国非裔文学的范畴,成为美国非裔文学史与文学研究的一部分。沃德教授对美国非裔文学的界定无疑拓展了中国学者对美国非裔文学的理解。Professor Jerry Ward,a distinguished professor of Dillard University,is one of the most important scholars in the field of African American literary studies.He is an expert in the study of Richard Wright＇s writings,African American poetry and the trauma theories.He is the co-editor of the forthcoming book The Cambridge History of African American Literature.In this interview,Professor Ward makes clear how the different grounding theories and the different understanding of literature shape the structure of different anthologies and histories of African American literature.Different from the well-known anthologists Henry Louis Gates and Nellie McKay who compiled The Norton Anthology of African American Literature,Professor Ward understands African American literature broadly as the writing of a people which includes essays and popular literary genres such as erotic novels,romance novels and street life novels.He believes that African American literature,originated from the black oral tradition,musical tradition and church tradition,should still take the writings from popular culture as its important part.His redefining of Afro-American literature broadens our vision of African American literature.
