摘　　要：《一位女士的画像》是詹姆斯创作初期的代表作品,作家以细腻的笔触刻画了一位挑战命运的女性形象。许多国内外学者围绕作品所体现的"国际主题"和伊莎贝尔的婚姻选择及其自由观,从不同的批评视角提出了自己的理解和看法。本文通过运用精神分析学家霍妮的焦虑理论,认为伊莎贝尔挥之不去的焦虑是因为所在的个体环境、文化环境使然。而伊莎贝尔在成长的不同阶段采取的防御策略———逃避、对抗和顺从———致使她离真实的自我越来越遥远。Henry James exquisitely portrays a female character challenging her destiny in The Portrait of a Lady, which is often considered a representative of his early works. Many scholars from home and abroad have put forward their own understandings and opinions concerning this heroine. They use different critical approaches to comment on ＂the International Theme＂, Isabel＇ s marriage choice, or her idea about freedom. With the anxiety theory proposed by Homey, a psychoanalyst, this paper attempts to argue that the haunting anxiety in Isabel is mainly caused by the individual and cultural environment where she lives. It further elaborates that her defensive measures taken at different stages of her life--escape, resistance, and submission--are what drive her farther and farther away from the real self.
