The occurrence states of heavy metals(Zn,Mn,Cr,Cu,Cd and Pb) in the surface sediments of Western Xiamen Bay and Jiulong River Estuary were evaluated by the modified BCR(European Communities Bureau of Reference) sequential extraction procedure. The potential mobile characteristics of heavy metals were also analyzed using the potential migration index(PMI).The results showed that the total contents of heavy metals were MnZnCrPbCuCd,with Mn concentration(1 471 mg/kg) and Zn concentration(231 mg/kg) being higher than the others. When compared with the sediment quality standards, the contents of Zn,Cr,Cu and Pb in Western Xiamen Bay were higher than those of Cd.The continuous application of the modified BCR procedure indicated that Zn,Cr and Cu existed as residual fractions.Specifically,Mn and Cd primarily existed in the acid soluble fraction, while Pb prevailed in the reducible fractions. The PMI of the six heavy metals indicated that the potential risk of migration in the Western Xiamen Bay sediments was MnCdZnCuPbCr.
