The growth patterns of two marine diatoms,Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum, were investigated under nitrogen concentrations of 0.75,7.5,75 and 150 mg/L by chlorophyll fluorescence determination. The growth rates of both algae were found to be significantly affected by nitrogen concentrations. In the experiments, chlorophyll fluorescences of S.costatum were 139.5,816.3,881.9 μg/L and 868.5 μg/L under nitrogen levels of 0.75,7.5,75 mg/L and 150 mg/L,respectively,while the chlorophyll fluorescence values were 54.3,572.9,974.4 μg/L and 976.4 μg/L for P.tricornutum, respectively, indicating that nitrogen enhanced the growth and proliferation of marine microalgae within a range of concentrations. Moreover, there was siginicant difference in growth response to nitrogen concentrations between S.costatum and P.tricornutum.In general,S.costatum showed stronger ability in adapting to low nitrogen concentration than P.tricornutum did. Therefore,it can be assumed that the nitrogen concentration be of particular importance in the growth and proliferation of marine microalgae, and that the difference in the adaptation to nitrogen among microalgae be a key factor in determination of the dominance of mircoalgae in the aquatic environments.
