摘　　要：库柏在对新教观念的消化、移植和变异基础上,把自己的写作与崭新的社会秩序建构紧密结合在一起。其扎根荒野生活的自然意识及西部边疆意识,一方面对东部的新英格兰乃至欧洲传统提出了挑战,以应对难以容忍的个人与社会、制度和家庭等束缚人的机制之间的矛盾;另一方面建立了一个新神话世界和创造一种引起新人希望的"美国梦",并为确立民族文化和文学的合法性奠定基础。这一分裂意识与矛盾特征及其相应的心理安全阀作用机制对20世纪美国文学产生了持续的影响。Cooper,based on his digestion,migration and mutation of the Protestant concept,combines his writing closely with the construction of a new social order.His natural consciousness and Western frontier awareness challenge the tradition of New England and Europe in order to cope with the intolerable conflict between individual and society,institution and constraining system like family on the one hand,and build a new legendary world,creating a promising ＂American Dream＂,and establishing the legitimacy of national culture and literary foundation on the other.This split consciousness,contradictory characteristics and their corresponding psychological safety valve mechanism have a sustained impact on the 20th century American literature.
