The agricultural soil in China is seriously polluted by Cd,Cu and Pb,which threaten food safety. In the present study, cruciferous mustard plants were used in potted experiments with uniform design as experimental material to investigate the effects of heavy metals Cd,Cu and Pb,and their interaction on growth and physiological characteristics. Results indicated that the Cd-Cu-Pb compound effect significantly inhibited the growth as well as chlorophyll content of the mustard, and chlorophyll a was more sensitive to compound pollution. The underground parts of the plant received much more serious injury than the above ground parts. Moreover, the inhibitory effect on mustard growth of the Cu-Pb compound effect was greater than other factors. In contrast, the Cu-Pb compound effect could promote chlorophyll level to some extent, while Cd was the main influencing factor that induced the decrease of chlorophyll. The SOD activity of the mustard leaves significantly increased in contrast to the control group when the Cu concentration was below 200 mg /kg under compound pollution. However, the opposite effect was observed when the Cu concentration was more than 200 mg /kg,which stimulated substantial accumulation of MDA as well as praline.
