摘 要:The etymology of the word "theatre" lies in the Greek word "theatron", meaning "a seeing place". Men, throughout history, have used drama to entertain, disseminate information and express their innermost feelings. Since most theatrical performances involve the collaborative efforts of many creative people working towards the singular goal, which is the production, the place of the costume designers cannot be glossed over in any production. Costume designers are the windows through which people can see into the script's inner meaning and the world of the characters. Their role as one of the vital elements in a theatrical production is immeasurable. The costume designer is, however, faced with many challenges, ranging from inadequate training, lacking of adequate storage facility. The preference for the glamour of being on stage rather than working behind the scenes, but the costume designer lacks of necessary exposure to modern techniques and technology. All these amongst other challenges militate against the costume designer in effective contribution in theatrical production. This paper seeks to highlight some of these challenges and proffers solutions towards the enhancement of their contributions to man's quest to imitate experience before their audiences.
