To obtain the rapid startup of EGSB reactor for treatment of coking wastewater, the rapid startup using brewery wastewater and the quick acclimation using coking wastewater in EGSB reactor seeded with anaerobic digestion sludge and a small amount of granular sludge were studied under ambient temperature. The results indicate that the EGSB reactor can be started up within 10 d when using brewery wastewater. The quick acclimation of granular sludge in the EGSB reactor can be achieved by gradually increasing the coking wastewater supplement ratio, and this acclimation phase lasts 6 months. With the conditions of about 2 200 mg/L of influent COD, influent flow rate of 1.2 L/h, organic load of 5.6 kg- COD/(m^3 · d) , HRT of 10 h, recycle ratio of 10 : 1 and upflow velocity of 3.1 m/h, the COD removal rate can reach 56.2%. The recycle dilution can reduce the toxicity of the coking wastewater to some extent, and relatively higher upflow velocity in the EGSB reactor can enhance the mass transfers, which ensures that the EGSB reactor can operate efficiently and stably when treating high concentration coking wastewater.
