Objective To determine the amount and distributing of proprioceptor in anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and periligamentous tissues. Thus the function of proprioceptor in ankle movement could be deduced. Methods ATFL from ten fresh cadaver ankle with ages ranging from 25 to 65 (mean 48. 1 ) years were collected. The ATFL were divided into three parts according to the bony attachments (proximal, central, and distal segments) before processing on serial sections of 20 μm thickness. The slices were stained by immunohistochemical method and examined under light microscopy. The proprioceptors were counted out and classified. Results The ATFL and periligamentous tissue were endowed with proprioceptors. There was a significant prevalence of proprioceptor type Ⅱ and type Ⅲ (P〈0. 001) compared with type I. However, there was no significant difference in the proprioceptors density in different part of ligament (P〉0. 05). Conclusions The proprioceptor in ATFL and perillgamentous tissue are mostly composed by type Ⅱ and type Ⅲ. It have been confirmed that the proprioceptor type Ⅱ and type Ⅲ are correlate with sense of movement and protect the joint from excessive movement. The large density of proprioceptor type Ⅱ and type Ⅲ correlated with stability of ankle and avoid excessive movement of ankle.
