In order to analyze the characteristics of soil fauna in Heptacodium miconioides woodland(Hmw),the experiment was carried out on the samples of Heptacodium miconioides woodland(Hmw) at different altitudes on Tiantai Mountain in Zhejiang Province,China, from April 2000 to April 2001.We collected specimens belonging to 4 phyla,13 classes and 27 groups. There were quite differences in density, group richness and DG index in the three plots of Hmw.The indexes of soil fauna in an area moderate in altitude were higher than others. It showed that less jamming Hmw woodland and in an area moderate in altitude was propitious to soil fauna breed.ANOVA(Analysis of variance) indicated that there were significant effects of season, altitude and soil depth on soil fauna(P 0.05,three-way-ANOVA),and significant interaction was found between altitude and season, and altitude and soil depth respectively. The indexes of soil fauna in autumn developed to the highest level, which were quite different at different altitudes.Soil fauna was distributed contradictorily in soil layer in summer and winter, and had surface concentration in spring and autumn.
