The response of indica rice to water supply levels was studied by pot experiment.Zhong 9B and Jinzao 47 were used as studied materials. The experiments were carried out by using four kinds of soils under climatological chamber and greenhouse conditions at rice vegetative growth stage. Results showed that the diurnal changes of leaf water potential(LWP) in rice at vegetative stages under different soil moisture treatments tended to be higher at early morning and late afternoon, but lower at the midday time, which displayed a nearly parabolic curve with the inflection point appeared around the midday time. The differences in LWP between the moisture irrigation condition and the water stress condition were more significant than that between the submerged irrigation condition and the moisture irrigation condition.LWP in rice declined at plant developmental stages, and LWP was less than-1.60 MPa,-1.70 MPa and-1.80 MPa at the midday time at tillering, booting and heading stages, respectively. These data could be served as a predictor for the onset of water deficiency in both tested rice materials.
