On the basis of IEEE 802.15.4a standard,a statistical channel model for UWB(ultra-wide band) signal propagation in underground coal mine is proposed.UWB techniques are better at meeting the requirements for coal mine wireless multimedia sensor networks(WMSNs),e.g.,anti-multipath,low power consumption, and geo-location.First,according to different coal mine propagation environments,e.g.,the size of the laneway, the existence of body and mining equipment, the coal mine channels are divided into three classes. The necessary condition for the existence of the Line of Sight(LOS) connection between the transmitter and receiver is then derived according to the Frensel theory.Secondly,a unified UWB statistical channel model is set up,and which can be differentiated by the measured values in different coal mine environments. Finally, the multipath and time delay spread characteristics of different coal mine UWB channels are investigated. The simulation results show the proposed coal mine channel model could well describe the proportion attenuation of UWB signal, and provide theoretical foundation for the development of low BER(bit error rate) UWB Rake receiver in coal mine.
