Objective To analyze the effects of BMSCs transplantation in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) of rabbits. Methods 42 RA models of New Zealand white rabbits were induced by injecting ovalbumin into right knee joints of them,6 rabbits were used as controls and MR imaging and pathology of knee joints in control group were clone at 4 weeks later after injection. Thirty-six else rabbits were randomly and equally (18 rabbits in each group) divided into an early RA models group (group A)and BMSCs transplantation group (group B). MR imaging and pathology of knee joints were done at 1, 2, 3 months after injection in both group A and B. The volume of synovium of the knee joints were measured by MRI, and pathohistological changes were observed and scored. The data were statistically analysed. Results Group A after 1, 2, 3 months showed synovium thickening and higher pathological scores, and group B showed synovium thinning and lower pathological scores. The correlation between MRI and pathology was remarkable. Conclusion MRI can show the effect of the early stages of RA in treatment. BMSCs can restrain inflammatory reaction in RA models of rabbits.
