清教主义和消费主义纠结下的《美国悲剧》

摘　　要：以往研究认为《美国悲剧》中主人公悲剧命运的根源在于20世纪以来美国社会消费主义的盛行和传统清教主义的式微。这种基于消费主义和清教主义二元对立的研究模式有较大局限。清教主义作为美国主流价值观的核心内容,和日益兴起的消费主义共同构成了20世纪美国社会观念的"灵"和"肉",控制着人们的生活方式和价值观念。可以从虚拟身份、虚设标准和虚伪制度三个角度解析《美国悲剧》所表现的清教主义和消费主义相互纠结下的社会文化思潮和价值观念。Previous studies tend to attribute the protagonist＇s tragedy to the prevalence of consumerism in the 20th century and the declination of Puritanism in the meantime. Such researching mode based on the binary opposition between Puritanism and consumerism has obvious limitation. This paper thinks that Puritanism still remaining the core of American mainstream cultural values and consumerism form the soul and flesh of 20th century American social norms, and the organic combination of the two exerts control over both people＇s way of life and values. The paper also analyzes the social-cultural thoughts and people＇s values in the entanglement of Puritanism and consumerism embodied in An American Tragedy from the three aspects, i.e. , false status, empty standards and hypocritical system.
