AIM To observe the influence of continuous alcohol treatment(CAT) and consecutive electroconvulsive shock(CECS) on learning and memory in mice. METHODS By the way of one trial passive avoidance response(step down, step through) and water maze methods to test the ability of learning and memory in mice. RESULTS The memory impairments of acquisition, consolidation and recognition were induced by CAT in step through, CECS in step through and CAT in step down and water maze respectively. However, no impairment on learning and memory could be found in each method when alcohol and ECS were given only one time. CONCLUSIONS The results have showed that CAT and CECS were ideal animal model of dementia.
