Objective To estimate HIV prevalence and incidence in men who have sex with men (MSM) in Beijing, and also to explore HIV epidemic trends in this population. Methods Samples of men who have sex with men were three rounds collected during the year of 2008 - 2009, and ELISA and wstern blot assays were used to detect HIV antibody as screening and confirmatory tests. Samples confirmed as HIV-1 positive were further tested with BED HIV-1 incidence capture enzyme immunoassay (BED-CEIA) to find recent HIV-1 infection, and the HIV-1 incidence for each year was then calculated. Results Total 1833 samples were tested for ELISA and western blot, and 96 samples were confirmed as HIV-1 positive. 68 HIV-1 positive samples were then tested with BED-CEIA and 36 of them were identified as recent infections. The HIV prevalence of men who have sex with men were 5.9%, 5.0%, 4.9% for each round during 2008 - 2009, while the corresponding incidence were 4.83% (2.36% - 7.54%), 4.83% (2.36% - 7.54%), 2.65% (0.82% - 4.55%). Conclusion HIV-1 prevalence and incidence among MSMs declined during the year of 2008 - 2009 in Beijing.
