摘　　要：《亚历山大的桥》是薇拉·凯瑟的第一部长篇小说,其艺术及思想价值难以与后来的内布拉斯加小说并驾齐驱,凯瑟本人更是多次严词诟病。然而,不能忽视的是,这部小说却在当时很长时间内保持了不错的销售业绩。本文指出,小说之所以能赢得市场的青睐,原因在于作者多年的新闻编辑经历使她准确选择了大众偏好的都市题材,并认为该小说并非如作者自己所言"浅陋之极",相反,小说用一个都市爱情故事的外表,隐喻式地表达了作者挣扎在市场与艺术中的两难处境。因此,这部小说在凯瑟整个艺术创作历程中是一部不能回避的作品。Alexander＇s Bridge is Willa Cather＇s first novel,but it is much less famous and influential than her Nebraska novels that followed it. Its being neglected is partly due to Willa Cather＇s own repeated disclaims of it as ＂immature＂ and even ＂shallow＂. Immature and less influential as it is,it sold well for decades in then America. This paper attempts to answer this paradox. It points out that the reason why it could win applauses from readers of that time is that its author deliberately chose metropolis as its setting,which was quite a fashion at that time. It further proves that the novel is not as shallow as Willa Cather herself thought of on the contrary,it reveals metaphorically the author＇s disintegrated spiritual condition pulled by the tension between market and art. Therefore,Alexander＇s Bridge,neglected for long,should not be ignored if we attempt to have a complete view of Willa Cather＇s writing career.
