The Inevitable Role of Cultural Background on the Iranian EFL Learners' Reading and Listening Skills

摘  要:The present study served as an at-tempt to investigate the influence of cultural background of the Iranian EFL language learners on their receptive skills--reading and listening. To do so, two classes of Iranian upper-intermediate learners of English learning in one of the language institutes in Shahrekord participated in the study. One of the classes was assigned to the experimental group (N = 33) and the other one the control group (N = 37). Having given to them a pre- and post-test reading comprehension test and also a pre- and post-test listening comprehension test (the tests containing cultural elements), the study's findings revealed that having cultural background knowledge about the content of a written or spoken text has a significant effect on reading and listening comprehension. The implication of the study was also mentioned in the study.
