摘 要:It is not news that literature is a recreation of life. Its functional orientation gives it an esteemed status in the socio-cultural context of its presentation. Olu Obafemi's collection of poems is not an exception. In a bid to achieve this feat, series of socially-constrained linguistic manipulations are noticeable in his works. In essence, a major striking feature that permeates his textual delivery is the socially and idiosyncratically stylized linguistic forms and choices that are used. The overall motivation of his strategy is the attempt to pair the text with its context as a way of achieving effectiveness of discoursal acts. His collection of poems "Songs of Hope" is a representation of the cause-effect viewpoints harboured by social critics in Nigeria. While a part of the poems in the collection laments socio-political and economic anomalies in the land, the poems that constitute the other part crave for corrective measures; corrective measures wrapped in "hopeful songs". In order to effectively realize these dual functions, convergence of textural patterns with peculiar linguistic configurations, and highly intoned expressions are deployed in foregrounding the thematic concerns of his poems. Hence, this paper seeks to determine the extent to which the collection has triggered the intended perlocution in its readers by trying to unravel the linguistic and stylistic resources manipulated by the poet in his presentation.
