The concentrations of trace elements in the sediments from Jinsha Relic Site,Chengdu,Sichuan(southwest China) were determined by Quadruple Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer(Q-ICP-MS).Based on the determination of the contents of trace elements and their ratios and a correlation analysis of trace elements with the contents of clay and organic material and with degree of free iron in the sediments, their paleoclimatic implications were discussed. The results demonstrated that Ba,Cr,Zr and Sr concentrations and the Ba/Nb,Rb/Sr and Ba/Sr ratios could indicate the evolution of paleoclimate in source area of the sediments. In the Longmen Mountains and Chengdu Plain, the climate from 3400a B.P.was characterized by a change trend of warm-moist to warm-wetting and to moderate temperature and relatively rare rainfall. The paleoclimatic implication of trace element signatures was in agreement with the previous conclusion using clay minerals, magnetic susceptibility and spore-pollen methods. As a result, the geochemical features of trace elements in the sediments might be a potential proxy to reconstruct the regional paleoclimate and paleoenvironment.
