摘  要:卡津的《扎根本土》追溯了1890-1940年间美国现代文学兴起的过程。这一时期正是美国社会全面工业化、经济快速发展引起较多社会问题的阶段。美国作家在"吸收"现实的同时又对现实有一定的"隔阂感",他们以独特的现代精神崛起于世界文学之林。《扎根本土》将作品的文学性与政治、经济、思想等元素相结合,以此肯定美国现代文学的成就。它是美国现代文学的"自我之歌",也是从文学的角度研究美国思想文化的经典之作。同时,卡津也看到美国文化深层的危机,忧虑个人主义思想的泛滥导致美国社会的原子化。但是作为30年代登上文坛的知识分子,他从未失去对社会的关怀和对文学的信心。Alfred Kazin's On Native Grounds traces the evolution of modern American literature during the years from 1890 to 1940,when social problems were provoked by wide spread industrialization and rapid economic development in the United States.American writers "absorbed" the reality and yet remained alienated at the same time.They established a great modern literature with special modern spirit.In this book Kazin emphasizes the distinctions among the American writers who have often been categorized into certain contemporary schools.Kazin penetrates deeply into modern literary works,and combines all the elements in his understanding of literature,including politics,economics,and ideas.Kazin thereupon sings a "Song of Myself" on modern American literature and launches a canonical research into American thoughts and culture from the perspective of literature.However,he also discerns the profound cultural crisis in American individualism,and is worried that it may lead to the atomization of the American society.As an intellectual starting out from the thirties,Kazin never loses his concern oabout the society and his confidence in literature.
