Abundant materials are available concerning the patterns on the bronze swords of the Zhou Dynasty unearthed in South Anhui. The cross-guards are mainly patterned with Animal Mask, Pan Chi or geom- etric shapes, and the pommels are basically patterned with strings or geometric shapes. The patterns of pommels and cross-guards share similar rule of evolution with the other parts of a sword, both of which are marked by significant characteristics of the time and a certain matching relationship exist between. Research shows that since the mid-late Western Zhou, a balance and coordination in decoration design between the pommel and the cross-guard of a sword had been pursued, which reached its peak in the late Spring and Autumn Period. Animal Mask pattern being used in cross-guard decoration was one of the greatest innovative reforms of the bronze culture of Wu & Yue States. The decline of the decoration art of bronze swords in the Warring States period reflected the transformation of the aesthetic view of sword making in Wu and Yue areas.
