[Objective] To understand the prevalence and risk factors of metabolic syndrome(MS) among middle aged and elderly military cadres in Changsha. [Methods] A total of 462 middle-aged and elderly (aged over 40 years old) military cadres in No. 163 hospital in Changsha from January 2009 to June 2009 were surveyed by using clustered sampling method. Meanwhile the physical examination was carried out. Fasting blood samples were collected to determine blood glucose, blood lipids, C reactive protein(CRP) and other related indicators. The preva lence of MS was analyzed. The risk factors of MS were analyzed by Logistic regression. [Results] The prevalence of MS among middle-aged and elderly military cadres in Changsha was 20.1%. Relevant risk factors of MS included female(OR= 1. 897), advanced age(OR= 1. 120), obesity(OR= 1. 506), smoking(OR=2. 859) , diabetes family history(OR= 2.163) and high level of CRP (OR=1. 834). [Conclusion]The prevalence of MS among middleaged and elderly military cadres in Changsha is higher. Female, advanced age, obesity, smoking, diabetes family history and high level of CRP are the risk factors of MS in middle-aged and elderly military cadres.
