Objective: To explore the effects of electric acupuncture on the ovulating mechanism in obese rats induced by high fat diet. Methods:The obese infertile rats were duplicated by fed high-energy diet to ablactated female SD rats, and then, were randomly untreated used as control or treated with electric acupuncture. The expression of neuropeptide Y (NRY) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in the arcuate nucleus of hypothalamus, and levels of estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), leptin, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luleinizing hormone (LH) in serum were detected. The parameters above-mentioned were analyzed among the normal rats, which were fed with normal diet, control rats and electric acupuncture treated rats. Results: Compared with control rats, electric acupuncture caused significant decrease in levels of E2, T and leptin, and increase in levels of FSH and LH in serum. In the arcuate nucleus of hypothalamus, the expression of NPY was down-regulated, while the expression of GnRH was up-regulated due to the application of electric acupuncture. Conclusion: Electric acupuncture can depress the proportion of anovulatory infertility induced by obesity through modulating the neuroendocrine metabolism and reducing dysfunction of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis.
