An internal source told China Entrepreneur that although the number of employees at GaoPeng had increased to 2000 within the past six months,the company would soon be lowering their numbers to around 1000. The discount coupon site GaoPeng.com is a joint venture between U.S.based Groupon Inc and Tencent.Groupon is one of the originators of the discount coupon industry;only 18 months after its establishment the company's estimated value had already reached 1.35 billion USD,one of the highest estimated values ever in the history of the internet industry.Within China,Groupon has numerous 'grandchildren',other sites that are also trying to make it big by following Groupon's path.According to incomplete statistics,as of August of this year the number of Chinese discount coupon sites has already surpassed 5500;basically 10 new sites every day over a period of 18 months. As the industry fast approaches a bubble,how will sites like these save themselves?
