Objective To investigate the impact of the metabolic syndrome(MS) on intima-media thickness(IMT) of carotid arteries in the subjects with varying degrees of abnormity of glucose metabolism. Methods A total of 183 participants were firstly divided into the group of normal glucose tolerance(NGT),the group of impaired glucose tolerance(IGT) and the group of type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM).Each group was divided into the subgroups with or without MS.The carotid IMT was detected with color ultrasonography. Results The IMT of the carotid arteries in NGT,IGT and DM group were(0.60±0.11),(0.64±0.12) and(0.66±0.14) mm,respectively. The carotid IMT in NGT group was significantly lower than that in DM group(P0.05);The carotid IMT in the subgroup without MS was significantly lower than that of the subgroup with MS in NGT group(P0.05).There were no significant differences in the carotid IMT among the other subgroups(P0.05).Conclusions There was a different impact of MS on the IMT in the carotid arteries in the subjects with varying degrees of abnormity of glucose metabolism. It was relative prominence in the subjects with NGT.
