granite China. July of 2010, the authors made a field investigation of Mountain Laoshan, which is composed of Mesozoic with its highest peak rising 1133 meters above sea level and is located on the shore of the Yellow Sea, The granite landforms of Mountain Laoshan have recently been considered as those created by the action of Quaternary glaciers in East China and well preserved. The critical evidence of the existence of the ancient Laoshan glaciers is the pits of various size apertures found on the rock surfaces of Mountain Laoshan. The pits from high altitude to low altitude of the mountain are interpreted as glacial potholes. In the investigation the features of the so-called glacial potholes were examined and the morphological parameters of them were measured as well. In this paper,a comparison of the differences in morphological features is made between the pits found in Mountain Laoshan and the true glacier potholes in other places of the world, showing that the so-called glacial potholes of Mountain Laoshan do not have the features created by subglacial fluvial erosion but have all the features a weathering pit should have, such as flat bottom, spill way, over hanging sides and so on. This paper enumerates a series of self-contradictory statements about the glacier pothole formation in Mountain Laoshan and other places of China made by the supporters of Quaternary glaciers in East China. This paper also replys to questions about weathering pit formation which are raised by the same persons and points out that the main cause for mistaking weathering pits for glacial potholes is a lack of geomorphologic knowledge to distinguish weathering and erosion processes, which includes the stream erosion and subglacial fluvial erosion. The conclusion is made that the so-called glacial potholes in Mountain Laoshan are nothing but weathering pits as generally found in other granite areas around the world and then the present landforms of Mountain Laoshan are not originated from glaciers. The so-called glacial potholes
