摘　　要：库柏在早期海洋小说和其他非小说类作品中,阐述了美国控制海权、成为海上强国的无限可能性。受19世纪前半叶美国独立自主和大国诉求的激励,以及美国海洋民族主义的影响,库柏在作品中极力建构一个强悍的、以海洋为平台的国家权力身份。他对一支强大的美国海军的横空出世高度期待,对开拓美国海上贸易和航运充满信心,渴望美国有朝一日在海上称霸,这充分体现了库柏浓厚的海权思想。不过,库柏的海权思想也同时反映出他狂热的帝国意识和霸权思想。James Fenimore Cooper,the founder of American maritime fiction,stimulated by the spirit of independence and freedom and the maritime nationalism,motivated by America's quest for a big power in the first half of the 19th century,fervently expressed his view of sea power in his maritime works and looked forward to the rise of America on the sea.He attempted to construct a powerful national status and a naval force,envisioning a supreme American presence that controls the sea and consequently dominates the world militarily,commercially,and financially.However,Cooper's idea of a sea power also reflected his empire consciousness.
