For the Japanese in late Tokugawa and Meiji periods, Shanghai was first a city of China and also a westernized city of the world, with its new appearance in the foreign settlement differed greatly from that in Chinese native place. Shanghai was a city closely related to Japan, as a community made up of Japanese residence came into being in Hongkou area in the late 19th century. For modern Japan,a country actively heading for East Asia and even the world arena, the Shanghai city, with such a diverse combination of independent but interrelated and ever - growing economic ,political and cultural influences ,was no doubt a gigantic existence. Shanghai understanding of the Japanese at that time, therefore, was first the understanding of China through the medium of Shanghai, and then the understanding of the world related to Shanghai and of the Sino -Japanese relation exhibited in Shanghai. Thus, for the Japanese at that time, modern Shanghai actually played three roles: a field to investigate China,a window to see the world and a framework to reflect Japan itself.
