摘　　要：This study explores the phenomenon of human hoping and its role as one addressed times of deep suffering. Vaclav Havel＇s writing on ＂deep hope＂ and Maurice Merleau-Ponty＇s classic work on embodiment were seen as points of intersection with Engaged Buddhist teachings. In-depth interviews with two Engaged Buddhists supported the premise of this paper： Deep or embodied hope is quite different from ordinary wishing or ＂hoping＂ and plays a positive role as one moved through their suffering process.
