The languages of Taiwan popular fictions during the Japanese occupation period are classical Chinese, Chinese national language (Mandarin) and Japanese. These popular fictions stress the revelations and descriptions of social phenomena such as marriage, love, family, ethics and so on, but they rarely directly echo or revolt the political policies of the colonial authorities then. Among them, the fictions written in classical Chinese value both the inheritance of traditional Chinese culture and the ab- sorption of external nutrition, the popular fictions written in Japanese stress !ove stories and thus avoid touching the politics then, and the popular fictions in Mandarin are in a paradox between sticking to the Chinese language and simultaneously flattering the colonists helplessly. Most of these popular fictions have the recessive resistance characteristic and the Chinese culture essence, in spite of the language tyranny oppression from the Japanese colonial authorities.
