Modal auxiliaries play an important role in expressing interpersonal meanings. However, EFL learners are rarely taught how to position themselves appropriately through the choice of modal auxiliaries. To raise the EFL learners' awareness of the importance of modal auxiliaries in meaning construction, this paper undertakes to provide a descriptive analysis of how such central modal auxiliaries as will and may are used in academic writing and the press. To facilitate the analysis, Palmer' s(2003 ) classification of modal meanings is adopted. The findings show that will and may are distributed differently across the two registers in terms of modal meanings and syntactic structures that they occur in. A knowledge of these differences will inform English learning and teaching in one way or another.
