历史的真实和文学的洞见——评格雷厄姆·格林的《沉静的美国人》

摘　　要：格雷厄姆·格林是英国现当代著名的小说家。他的作品题材广泛、主题思想丰富、表现手法多样，他因此在世界文坛占有一席之地。《沉静的美国人》是格林的代表作之一。当我们将该小说放到二战以来世界历史和英美文学的双重语境中时，我们发现它不仅真实地再现了当时的世界历史图景，而且还开启了美国越南战争文学。《沉静的美国人》因此被西方学者视为最早的越战文学作品，并且是最优秀的越战作品之一。Graham Greene is a famous contemporary British writer. His works cover a wide range of subject matters, themes and writing techniques, which earns him the title of one of the great writers in the world-wide literary circle. The Quiet American is one of Greene＇ s masterpieces. We find that the novel not only truly represents the history of the world at that period, but also starts American literature of the Vietnam War, when we put it in the contexts of the world＇ s his- tory and British and American literature after World War II. Therefore, The Quiet American is regarded as, by western critics, file earliest narrative of the Vietnam War, and one of the best novels of the Vietnam War.
