Pot and field experiments were carried out to study the effects of potassium on leaf area and transmittance in rice plants. Two rice ( Oryza satva L. ) cultivars were respectively planted in pots with 15kg paddy soil containing available K 25ppm ,N 48. 8ppm ,P 15. 5ppm and in the field containing available K 83ppm,N 120ppm,P 54ppm in the soil. The results showed that in both the pot and field experiments the leaf area from maximum tilling stage to heading stage increased with application of potassium. K_0(no application of K),K_1(l. 5gK/pot)and K_2(3. 0gK/pot)all had an extremely significant(P=10^-6) regression equation between the leaf areas and days from transplanting till heading stage by imitating growth curve y = K/(l+Ae^(BD)) ,but constants K,A and B were smaller in the case of K_0. In the field experiment potassium did not depress transmittance in the population with increasing leaf area index. On the contrary, more leaves were in favorable conditions of more intensive illlumination because of the greater erectness of the leaves and higher transmittance of the flag leaves. Along with the increase of potassium application level, the peak of the leaf trans-mittant spectrogram drifted towards shorter wavelenth within the green light range. Net photosyn-thetic rate of the flag leaf and grain yield of rice also rose by applying potassium into the soil .
