Throughout the history of academic research on the Ancient Greek tragedy Medea at home and abroad, the heroine Medea has been interpreted very differently as an overarching goddess, a libidinous, evil and selfish demon, a courageous and staunch feminist; or revolutionist who undertakes an unyielding resistance against the oppression. These interpretations, sharply different from one another, may be right or wrong, because of the complexity of Medea's image and the influences from the diverse reception contexts and reception horizons. It is argued in this paper that a correct interpretation of the heroine lies with the approaches oriented to the history, the text itself, and the aesthetics perspective, rather than utilitarianism.
