摘 要:乔治·艾略特早期作品中的叙事模式与远古成年礼仪式有着同构关系。主人公都实现了由自我中心主义到获得完整自我意识的道德进步。服从是实现成年礼的首要条件。磨难使个体意识到自我的力量与弱点,从而调整意识自我,以更开阔的视野认识客观世界的真实联系及自我与集体的联系。个体对记忆的虔诚及其对集体的归属感和认同感使个体自身以及个体与集体内部能够重新统一对立的力量,最终结束其成长过程的边缘姿态,实现对社会意识形态的认同和皈依。对成年礼原型的模仿体现了作者对个人及社会道德进步的倡导与追求。The initiation story in George Eliot's early works is the displacement of initiation ritual.The protagonists realize the moral growth by evolving from egoism to complete self-consciousness.Submission is the precondition of successful initiation.The sufferings render the individual capable of the vision of his strength and weakness,thus adjusting his self-consciousness and acknowledging the real relations of things and his connection with the group.The piety on memory and the sense of identification with the group makes it possible for the individual to reconcile the conflicting elements of his personality,thus ending his periphery in the growing process and adapting himself to the society.The imitation of initiation rite in her novels represents Eliot's pursuit of both personal and social growth.
