Accent affects the interpretation of adverbs in sentences. Most of the researches suggest that dou (都) is interpreted as "even" if the stress is on the subject and dou (都) simply means "all" when the stress falls on dou (都). However, this suggestion depends on the intuition. Evidence from experimental research is still needed to prove it. This paper investigates the Chinese native speakers' and Chinese learners' interpretation of dou (都) by adopting experiments. The experiments indicate that there exists a significant difference between the second -language learners and the native speaker while using prosody as a cue to interpret sentences with dou (都) correctly. These results also shine more light on teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
