Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the short-term effect of different carbon sources (acetic acid, propionie acid and glucose) and influent pH (6.5, 7.0 and 7.5) on the metabolism of glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) , which were acclimatized in a continuous flow anaerobic/aerobic (A/O) process. The results show that the GAOs sludge can quickly take up propionic acid and acetic acid, while glucose is not consumed completely. When comparing the poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) synthesized per unit carbon source consumed, the synthesis amount is maximum when using glucose as the carbon source, and this synthesis amount are minimum when using propionic acid as the carbon source. However, in the case of glucose, glycogen is increased in the later period of anaerobic phase as compared with that of acetic acid and propionic acid. The pH experiments show that as the in- fluent pH is increased, VFAs uptake rate is decreased; however, the short-term change of influent pH has no great impact on the metabolism of intracellular substance such as glycogen and PHA.
