Acrylonitrile-methyl acrylate(AN/MA,molar ratio 85/15) copolymers were synthesized by aqueous redox polymerization and emulsion polymerization, respectively. The copolymer composition, rheological behaviors and thermal properties of the copolymers were respectively investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),elemental analysis(EA),Ubbelohde viscometer, rheology advantage instrument(TA),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and thermogrametric(TG) analysis. The results show that the copolymer composition of the AN/MA(85/15) copolymer prepared from aqueous redox polymerization and emulsion polymerization is 84.85/15.15 and 85.30/14.70,which is very close to feed ratio. The copolymer's intrinsic viscosities are 0.53 dL/g and 0.51 dL/g and it exhibits good thermodynamic stability in 30 min, which is consistent with the requirements of melt spinning. In comparison with the copolymer synthesized by aqueous redox polymerization, the copolymer prepared from emulsion polymerization exhibits excellent thermodynamic stability and rheological properties and thus facilitates the copolymer with a better melt processability.
