摘　　要：情态(modality)属于人类语言重要的语法、语义、语用和认知范畴,英语情态助动词的多义性、语义交叉、层级性和心理认知复杂性使其成为语言学界研究的热点和难点。文章梳理了各主流语言学派对英语情态助动词意义研究脉络,试图厘清英语情态助动词意义研究范畴界限并指出研究的优势和不足。Model auxiliary verb,featuring plurality in meaning,meaning overlapping hierarchy and complexity of psychological cognition,is a hot topic frequently discussed from the perspective of structural,semantic,pragmatic and cognitive linguistics.The paper dredges the research venation of the major linguistics schools in studying English model auxiliary verbs with the purpose to tentatively clarify the theoretical boundary in this field.Meanwhile it identifies the merits and demerits in researching English model auxiliary verbs by varied linguistic schools.
