摘　　要：Objective： A methanolic extract of the seed of Adenanthera pavonina was evaluated for acute heamatological effects and antimicrobial properties using animal model. Materials and methods： The methanolic extract ofAdenanthera pavonina seeds was subjected to phytochemical analysis, pharmacological screening in various animal models and in vitro antimicrobial assay. Results： Phytochemical analyses of the extract shows the presence of cardiac glycosides, essential oils, phlobatannins, tannins, flavanoids and saponins. These phytochemicals or bioactive substances may have been responsible for the observed biological activities. The LDs0 value of the extract was shown to be 1360 mg/kg. The antimicrobial assay shows that it moderately inhibits bacterial of the gram negative strain. It also has dose dependent anthelmintics effect on tested organisms. From the LDs0 value, the general acute toxicity study and heamatological result, it caused no changes that might suggest a toxic side effect. Conclusion： An inference drawn from the general information provided by this work is that Adenanthera pavonina seeds possess antimicrobial activities which may have therapeutic and pharmacological applications.
